The Fire Department of the Borough of Steelton
shall be under the control, superintendence and direction of a Chief,
one Assistant Chief and two Battalion Chiefs, all of whom shall be
officers of the Borough.
Said officers shall be appointed by the Council
and shall serve for and during the term of two years and until their
successors shall have been confirmed by said Council.

Said Chief shall at all times have full control
of engines, hose and hose carriages, hooks, ladders and full apparatus
generally and give general directions how, when and where to use them
in case of fires and where the hose shall be attached, shall place
the engines, direct the streams and order the hose to the several
engines and shall have a general supervision of the fire apparatus.
He shall have free access thereto at all times for the purpose of
inspection and shall weekly inspect the same and shall report to the
Council the condition thereof at least every month, and oftener if
the Council shall so direct by resolution. He shall have full power
and authority to have the apparatus repaired when necessary and to
purchase such material as he may deem necessary to keep the Department
in proper condition for service during the intervals between the regular
meeting of the Council and recess of the Council, provided that any
repairs that require the expenditure of more than $1,000 he shall
report to the Borough Property Committee for approval before the contract
is let, and in no event shall he enter into any contract wherein the
contract price is $1,000 or more. He shall render an account every
month to the Council of expenditures for the Department. He shall
submit to the Council, for its approval, rules and regulations, with
proper penalties, for the government of said Department.
The Assistant Chief shall aid the Chief in the
performance of his duties, and, in the event of the incapacitation
of the Chief by reason of sickness or absence from the Borough, the
Assistant Chief shall assume charge and act as Chief in such order
as shall be designated by the Chief.

The Battalion Chiefs shall aid the Assistant
Chief in the performance of his duties, and, in the event of the incapacitation
of the Assistant Chief by reason of sickness or absence from the Borough,
the Battalion Chiefs shall assume charge and act as Assistant Chief
in such order as shall be designated by the Chief; in the event of
incapacitation of both the Chief and the Assistant Chief by reason
of sickness or absence from the Borough, the Battalion Chiefs may
assume charge and act as Chief in such order as shall be designated
by the Chief.
