A. The Township Committee shall, at the organization
meeting each year or at any other time, appoint Special Police Officers
for a term not exceeding such calendar year, and may revoke such appointment
at any time without cause or hearing. The powers, rights and duties
of such Special Officers shall cease immediately at the expiration
of the term of which they were appointed or upon revocation of their
appointment.
B. The Township Committee shall designate said Special
Officers as either Class I Officers or Class II Officers. This section
authorizes Class I Special Officers to issue summons for disorderly
and petty disorderly persons offenses, traffic violations (Title 39),
and municipal ordinances.
Such special police officers shall not be members
of the Police Department or entitled to any rights or privileges of
a member of the Police Department, but when assigned to duty shall
have the same power and authority as a member of the Police Department.
The qualification for such appointment shall
be established by regulations to be promulgated by the Township Committee.
