(A) 
It shall be unlawful to install fuel oil storage tanks for single-family dwelling use in excess of 275 gallons. The size of tanks for other use shall be in size consistent with building area and use.
(B) 
Tanks shall not be permitted above ground except in enclosed structures abutting the building on at least one side and extended vertically from ground to eave of roof or parapet, being of construction and exterior finish matching the unit to which attached. The interior shall be finished with noncombustible and nonabsorbent materials, cement-asbestos or similar in prototype. An electric light shall be required within the enclosure unless an existing light provides adequate illumination into the space. The tank shall be adequately supported with legs on concrete or masonry units, and with fill and vent pipes extending to the exterior in an approved manner.
(C) 
Buried oil tanks shall be coated with asphaltum, paint or other protective coating, and backfilled with sand to protect coating and provide stable position; and the top of the tank shall be a minimum of one foot zero inches below adjoining grade.
(D) 
In the event of leaking tanks requiring replacement during October through March, and the owner intends to bury the tank but is prevented by frost, or the owner intends to convert to gas and has authorization from the Northern Illinois Gas Company, the owner shall file notice with the Building Commissioner and obtain written approval to permit the tank to remain above ground until not later than May 1 following, after which time it shall be buried or enclosed as hereinabove described, or removed and replaced with gas fuel; or the owner shall be subject to a fine as prescribed for violations of the Building Code.
(E) 
In residences with basements, the oil tank may be located in the basement area, adequately supported on legs and vented to the exterior; and in no case closer than 10 feet zero inches to an open flame of any device.
(F) 
Oil tanks serving public assembly and commercial structures shall be buried as described.
(G) 
Liquid gas tanks for residences shall be permitted, if used as interim heating, until converting to natural gas, and are subject to location and use restrictions as determined by the Fire Department and Building Commissioner.
