The position of Police Chaplain of the Township of Carneys Point is created in accordance with the provisions of N.J.S.A. 40A:14-141. The position will be served on a volunteer basis and shall be under the supervision and control of the Police Liaison Officer and Chief of Police. This position will not be affiliated with any other police chaplain program.
The Chief of Police may recommend persons to the Township Committee that the Chief believes meet the qualifications of N.J.S.A. 40A:14-141, as well as the regulations of the Carneys Point Township Police Department. Applicants for the position shall be reviewed by the Chief of Police to determine qualifications. The Township Committee shall determine whether an appointment of one or more Chaplains recommended by the Chief of Police shall be made.
Any person appointed as Chaplain shall become a member of the Police Department pursuant to N.J.S.A. 40A:14-141, but shall serve in the capacity on a volunteer basis without rank, salary or benefits.
Any person appointed as Chaplain shall serve at will. The chaplain may be removed from the position with or without cause as deemed appropriate by the Township Committee of the Township of Carneys Point. The Township Committee will reevaluate the Chaplain program and whether it shall continue at least once every two years.
Any person appointed as Chaplain shall be an ordained clergyman in good standing in the religious body from which he or she is selected. The Chaplain shall have received basic training and shall be a certified Police Chaplain in accordance with the rules of the Chaplain program and Carneys Point Township.
The duties of the Police Chaplain shall include, but not be limited to, assisting the Carneys Point Police Department in death notifications, station house adjustments, crisis response and any other duties that shall be assigned by the Chief of Police. The Chief of Police shall adopt standard operating procedures to outline the internal rules and regulations pertaining to the position of the Chaplain.
