The offices of Assessors in the Town of Southold shall continue to be
elective, as provided by the law in effect immediately prior to the effective
date of § 1556 of the Real Property Tax Law, as added by Chapter
957 of the Laws of 1970.
This article shall be subject to a mandatory referendum and shall be
submitted for the approval of the electors of the Town of Southold at a special
election to be held at a time not later than July 1, 1971.

Sections 1 and 2 of Chapter
68 of the Laws of 1856, entitled "An Act to Authorize the Inhabitants of the Town of Southold, in the County of Suffolk, to Elect Six Assessors for Said Town," as amended by Chapter 374 of the Laws of 1898, and by Chapter 825 of the Laws of 1961, are hereby amended to read as follows:

"Section 1. On and after the 31st day of December 1971, there shall
be four Assessors for the Town of Southold. On and after the 31st day of December
1973, there shall be three Assessors for the Town of Southold."

"Section 2. At a biennial Town election for the year 1971, one Assessor
shall be elected for a term of four years and one Assessor shall be elected
at every second biennial Town election held thereafter. At the biennial Town
election for the year 1973, two Assessors shall be elected for a term of four
years and two Assessors shall be elected at every second biennial Town election
held thereafter."

The provisions of this article shall not become effective unless the
Town Board of the Town of Southold, prior to April 30, 1971, adopts a local
law, subject to a mandatory referendum, providing that the office of Assessor
of the Town of Southold shall continue to be elective, and such law shall
be approved by the electors of the Town of Southold at a special Town election
held not later than July 1, 1971.
This article shall be subject to a mandatory referendum and shall be
submitted for the approval of the electors of the Town of Southold at a special
Town election.
