Township of Burlington, NJ Chapter 262 Fire Hydrants

§ 262-1 Definitions.

As used in this chapter, the following terms shall have the meanings indicated:

FIRE HYDRANT

A discharge pipe with a valve and spout at which water may be drawn from the mains of waterworks maintained and operated for the purposes of fire protection to the community.

WATERLINES

Lines from the water distribution system maintained in the Township of Burlington which provide water to the fire hydrant system.

§ 262-2 Quality of hydrants.

All hydrants shall be the Mathews type or equally approved.

§ 262-3 Joints, valves and fittings.

A. All hydrants shall have counterclockwise valve openings.

B. All hydrants are to have one four-and-one-half-inch steamer connection facing the roadway (national standard thread).

C. All hydrants are to have two two-and-one-half-inch male clay Jones-type fittings with screw cap covers. The two two-and-one-half-inch connections shall face parallel with the curbline or roadway.

§ 262-4 Height, setback and distance requirements.

A. Minimum setback off curb shall be 18 inches to center of hydrant.

B. Minimum height shall be 18 inches above the curb to center of the four-and-one-half-inch steamer connection.

C. Distance between hydrants shall be a maximum of 600 feet or less along the curbline.

§ 262-5 Painting.

A. Hydrants, generally. All hydrants are to be painted with the brand of paint designated by the Director of Public Works, or of equal quality as approved by the Director of Public Works.

B. Paint colors shall be as designated by the Director of Public Works pursuant to regulations which shall be available in the office of the Township Clerk and the Department of Public Works office.

§ 262-6 Waterlines.

A. Lines between hydrants. All waterlines between hydrants are to be no less than eight-inch cast-iron cement-lined pipe.

B. Lines to hydrants. All laterals from waterlines to hydrants are to be no less than six-inch cast-iron cement-lined pipe.
