A structure used for rental and/or leased residential purposes other than a hotel or multiple dwelling, as defined in the Hotel and Multiple Dwelling Law (P.L. 1967, c. 76; N.J.S.A. 55:13A-1 et seq.), shall have a smoke-sensitive alarm device located on each level of the premises. Said device shall be approved by the Underwriters' Laboratory U.S. 217 Standard and may be either battery- or electrically-operated. The above provisions shall also apply at time of resale of a residential structure as defined above.
