§ 233-1 Purpose.

The Town Board of the Town of Cortlandt has determined that there are certain road intersections in the Town of Cortlandt wherein students, on their way to and from school, would be in need of adult supervision and assistance in either waiting at those intersections or in crossing those intersections. The Town Board further determines that it is in the interest of the people of the Town of Cortlandt that school crossing guards be placed at certain intersections throughout the town for the health, welfare and safety of the school-age children of the Town of Cortlandt.

§ 233-2 Position established.

There is hereby established in the Town of Cortlandt the position of school crossing guard. All school crossing guards appointed by the Town Board in accordance with this chapter shall have the authority to control traffic at the intersections of town roads and to assist school-age children in crossing those intersections and also in awaiting the arrival of school buses at any intersections at any town roads in the Town of Cortlandt.

§ 233-3 Appointment; locations.

A. 
The Town Board may, by resolution from time to time, in accordance with budgetary provisions therefor, appoint and designate persons as school crossing guards in accordance with this chapter.
B. 
The Town Board shall also designate at what intersections said school crossing guards shall be placed and may, by resolution, redesignate or change the intersections at which school crossing guards shall be located.

§ 233-4 Supervision; rules and regulations.

Any school crossing guard appointed herein shall be under the supervision of the Chief of Police of the Town of Cortlandt. The Chief of Police shall set the schedules of said school crossing guards and shall provide the school crossing guards with the requisite training necessary for them to properly fulfill their positions. The Chief of Police is hereby empowered to promulgate such rules and regulations with respect to school crossing guards as may be necessary.

§ 233-5 Authority to control traffic.

All school crossing guards as herein appointed shall have the full authority to control traffic at the intersection of any town roads in the Town of Cortlandt. Said authority shall be to stop all traffic to allow for the crossing of children at said intersections. All vehicles, when so directed by school crossing guards, shall stop upon their lawful direction.

§ 233-6 Penalties for offenses.

Any person who disobeys the lawful order of the school crossing guard with respect to the regulation of traffic shall be guilty of a violation and shall be punished by a fine not to exceed two hundred fifty dollars ($250.) or up to fifteen (15) days in jail or by a civil penalty not to exceed one thousand dollars ($1,000.).
