There is hereby established the office of Village Attorney.
The candidate must be admitted to practice law in the State of New York and federal courts of this district. The candidate shall also have practiced law for no fewer than five years or have experience as a municipal attorney.

The Village Attorney shall render legal counsel to the Mayor and Board of Trustees, the Village Manager, the Board of Ethics and other Village departments and authorities; the Village Attorney shall represent the Village in civil litigation and do related work as required; the Village Attorney shall communicate and coordinate with such other special counsels as may be necessary, including, but not limited to, Land Use Counsel, Bond Counsel, Labor Counsel, General Liability Counsel (as assigned by insurance companies) and the Village Prosecutor.

The Board of Trustees shall appoint the Village Attorney and fill vacancies in such office.

The Board of Trustees shall fix said Village Attorney's salary and other terms and conditions of employment not inconsistent with the provisions hereof. Notwithstanding the foregoing, the Village Attorney shall have no civil service status, may be an employee of the Village employable by the Village and shall be subject to dismissal by a majority of the Board of Trustees.
In addition to the above, subject to approval and authorization of the Board of Trustees, the Village may employ outside attorneys or law firms to perform legal services for the Village.

The Village Prosecutor shall be appointed by the Board of Trustees. Such appointment shall be for a term of one year and shall be made annually at the Board's annual organizational meeting. Any vacancy shall be filled by the Board of Trustees and such appointee shall serve until the next annual organizational meeting.
