[HISTORY: Derived from Ch. II, Sec. 2-41,
of the Revised General Ordinances of the Borough of Fort Lee, 1978,
adopted 3-1-1979. Amendments noted where applicable.]
As a condition to prospective employment or
continued employment by the Borough of Fort Lee of a school crossing
guard (and not by way of limitation to other qualifications required
by law or otherwise), each individual shall obtain written certification,
as hereinafter provided, or minimum auditory and visual acuity. Specifically,
each individual shall meet the following standards:
A.
Distance visual acuity of at least 20/60 in each eye
with or without corrective lenses;
B.
Visual field of vision of at least 60º in the
horizontal meridian in each eye;
C.
The ability to recognize colors of traffic signals
and devices showing standard red, green and amber; and
D.
The ability to perceive a forced whispered voice in
the better ear of not less than five feet with or without the use
of a hearing aid; or if tested by use of an audiometric device, does
not have an average hearing loss in the better ear greater than 40
decibels at 500 Hz, 1,000 Hz and 2,000 Hz with or without a hearing
aid when the audiometric device is calibrated to an American National
Standard (formerly ASA Standard) Z24.5-1951.

A.
The applicant or current crossing guard shall obtain
the necessary written certification from a private physician, licensed
in medicine, ophthalmology or optometry, at no cost to the applicant
or current crossing guard, which shall be submitted to the Police
Department. The Police Department shall submit a written report to
the Borough Administrator certifying the results of each visual and
auditory test.
B.
In the event that an individual fails to meet the
minimum auditory and visual standards set forth herein, the individual
may, at his/her sole cost and expense, undertake corrective measures
(i.e., lenses or hearing aid device) and, thereafter, again undertake
the examinations required herein.
A.
All school crossing guards presently employed by the
Borough of Fort Lee shall undertake the examinations required herein
within 30 days of the effective date of this chapter. In the event
any present crossing guard fails to meet the minimum standard, he/she
shall be given an additional 20 days to obtain corrective measures
and retake the examinations.
B.
In the event that any currently employed school crossing
guard fails to obtain the written certification required hereunder,
within the time frame established herein, the Borough Administrator
shall notify the individual of his/her termination of employment,
which shall be immediately effective.
