There is hereby established the position of Tax Assessor in the Township of Hanover, and the Board of Tax Assessors is hereby abolished, pursuant to the provisions of Chapter 393 of the Laws of 1981.[1]

The Township Committee of the Township of Hanover shall appoint a person to the position of Tax Assessor by a majority vote of the members of the Township Committee present and voting.
Every person appointed to the position of Tax Assessor shall hold office for a term of four years from the first day of July next following his appointment.
The Tax Assessor shall be charged with the duty of assessing property for the purpose of general taxation, and, as part of that duty he shall do the following:
A. 
Review and process deeds.
B. 
Review, classify and process SRIA's.
C. 
Maintain property record cards.
D. 
Process and defend, with the assistance of the Township Attorney, tax appeals before the County Board of Taxation and the Tax Court.
E. 
Process all added assessments.
F. 
Process homestead rebate filings.
G. 
Process senior citizen and veteran property-deduction applications.
H. 
Prepare and deliver the tax rolls to the Morris County Tax Board annually.
I. 
Review and process applications for farmland assessments, exemptions and tangible personal property forms filed by utilities.
J. 
Coordinate the activities of any firm retained by the Township for revaluation purposes.
The office of Tax Assessor shall be in the Department of Finance, and the Assessor shall coordinate his work and work needs with the head of that Department.
The salary of the position of Tax Assessor shall be fixed by the Township Committee by ordinance.[1]

The Tax Assessor shall maintain the following office hours at the Municipal Building for the convenience of the public and other members of the Administration: Tuesdays and Thursdays, except on holidays fixed by the Township, from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. In addition to the required office hours, the Tax Assessor shall serve an average of six additional hours per week in connection with field work or general administration or a total of 14 hours per week.
