There is hereby authorized and established the Mount Laurel Fire Department, to be composed of two companies to be known as the "Masonville Fire Company No. 1" and the "Fellowship Fire Company No. 2" and such additional companies as the Mount Laurel Township Council may authorize and approve.

No person may hereafter become an active member of the Fire Department of Mount Laurel Township or any unit thereof unless he is above the age of 18 years and not over the age of 40 and a citizen of the United States. He shall be physically fit to perform the duties of a fireman as evidenced by a certificate to that effect by a practicing physician of the State of New Jersey, after physical examination for that purpose.
Every active member of the Fire Department shall, in each and every year, perform at least 60% of duty to be composed of actual attendance and duty at fires and drills, and a record shall be kept of such attendance and duty by the Chief of the Fire Department and reported to the municipal officers annually.
Every person seeking to join the Fire Department shall make application to the company or unit which he desires to join, and upon his election to membership by vote, as required by the constitution or bylaws of the company to which he has applied, he shall become a member in good standing of the Fire Department after approval of his membership by the Chief and confirmation by the Township council, and his name shall be entered on a roll of firemen kept by the Municipal Clerk.
The Municipal Clerk shall issue exemption certificates, as provided by law, to members of the Fire Department who have or shall have served seven years in active duty.

A person above the age of 40 years and not over 55 years, who is a citizen of the United States, may become an auxiliary active member of the Fire Department of Mount Laurel Township or any unit thereof. He shall be physically fit to perform the duties of an auxiliary active fireman evidenced by a certificate to that effect by a practicing physician of the State of New Jersey, after physical examination for that purpose. Such auxiliary active member shall not be entitled to receive the benefits of an active member of the Fire Department.
The Fire Marshal shall be appointed by the Manager for a term of one year from the first day of January of the year of his appointment or until his successor is appointed and qualified, to be paid such compensation as shall be fixed from time to time by a general salary ordinance. The Fire Marshal shall coordinate with the Director of Public Safety the activities of the various Fire Departments with respect to their effect on the Township as a whole and the coordination and enforcement of the Fire Prevention Code.

A. 
All duly qualified applicants for the position of Mount Laurel Township Firefighter shall be classified in the following classes:
(1) 
Class I: residents of Mount Laurel Township.
(2) 
Class II: other residents of Burlington County.
(3) 
Class III: other residents of contigious counties.
(4) 
Class IV: other residents of the State of New Jersey.
(5) 
Class V: all other qualified applicants.
B. 
All appointments to the position of Mount Laurel Township fire fighter shall be made in accordance with N.J.S.A. 40A: 14-123.1a, with all those in Class I to be appointed first and then those in each succeeding class in the order listed.
C. 
All applicants classified as Class I must be residents of Mount Laurel Township as of the announced closing date of the civil service examination for the position and must maintain such residency continuously up to and including the date of appointment.
D. 
A copy of this section shall be forwarded to the New Jersey Department of Personnel.
