There is hereby established, in and for the Borough of Hasbrouck Heights, a Volunteer Auxiliary Ambulance Squad, the purpose of which is hereby declared to be the rendering of aid and assistance to the ambulance company of the Fire Department of the Borough of Hasbrouck Heights as the same has been established and is governed by law and ordinances but nevertheless separate and distinct from said Fire Department and the ambulance company thereof, except as hereinafter specifically provided.
A. 
Said Volunteer Auxiliary Ambulance Squad shall be composed of volunteers between the ages of 18 and 65 years who reside within the Borough of Hasbrouck Heights or the Borough of Teterboro or within a one-mile radius of the boundaries of the Borough of Hasbrouck Heights or who conduct their business or employment within the Borough of Hasbrouck Heights for no fewer than 40 hours per week, and who are of good general physical health and who are found to be of good moral character after a thorough check of police records is made. Application for membership shall be made to the Fire Commissioner or, should there be one, the Fire Committee and shall be considered by the Mayor and Council only after recommendation by the Fire Commissioner or, should there be one, the Fire Committee. Membership shall become effective for a qualified applicant only after such recommendation, nomination by the Mayor and confirmation by the Council.

B. 
Said members shall be qualified to serve as officers of the Ambulance Squad as provided in § 28-2.1B.

C. 
Said members shall also be qualified to vote with the Ambulance Squad to the same extent as an Ambulance Squad member may do so by ordinance, bylaws or rules and regulations governing said Ambulance Squad.

The Fire Commissioner or, should there be one, the Fire Committee shall formulate such rules and regulations governing the organization and operation of this Squad as he or it deems reasonable and appropriate to carry out the purpose and intent of this article, which rules and regulations shall become effective upon adoption of this article by resolution of the Mayor and Council. Nevertheless, when in actual aid or assistance of the ambulance company, the members of this Squad shall be under the direct command of the officers of the ambulance company and shall be subject to the same rules and regulations as imposed upon its members.

A gratuity to the members of the Squad shall be given and paid at such rate as the Mayor and Council may, by resolution, direct.
