The responsibility for inspecting weights and measures shall be under the supervision of the Inspector of Weights and Measures, who shall be appointed by the Mayor in accordance with the provisions of the Civil Service Act. The Inspector of Weights and Measures may also serve as a sanitary inspector and shall report to the Director of the Board of Health within the Inspection Services Department. Alternatively, the Board of Health may contract with a nongovernmental provider of the services of an Inspector of Weights and Measures.
The Mayor may appoint Deputies, in accordance with the provisions of the Civil Service Act, to act under the direction of the Inspector of Weights and Measures/Sanitary Inspector.

The Inspector of Weights and Measures/Sanitary Inspector shall collect and be responsible for all fees and charges which by law he or she is allowed to receive and shall remit to the City Treasurer, monthly, all sums so received and at the same time furnish the City Auditor with a duplicate statement of such accounts.

The Inspector of Weights and Measures/Sanitary Inspector shall, at the time of sealing, furnish the owner of the articles sealed or his or her agent a certificate stating the name and address of the owner of the articles sealed, the type of article sealed, the date when sealed and the amount of fee collected. The certificate shall be signed by the Inspector or a Deputy Inspector.
The Inspector of Weights and Measures/Sanitary Inspector shall enforce all laws relating to the use of weights and measures and the giving or use of false weights or measures.

The Inspector of Weights and Measures/Sanitary Inspector shall annually, between the first and 10th day of January, report to the Director of Standards of the Department of Labor and Industries all the weighing and measuring devices tested, sealed or condemned by him or her in accordance with the provisions of MGL c. 98, § 37.

The Inspector of Weights and Measures/Sanitary Inspector shall devote half of his or her time during business hours to Weights and Measures and half of his or her time as a Sanitary Code Inspector reporting to the Director of the Board of Health.
The office of the Inspector of Weights and Measures/Sanitary Inspector shall be open during the regular hours which the various departments of the City Hall are open for business.
