Definitions. As used in this chapter, the following terms shall have the meanings indicated:
BUILDING
Includes all principal structures such as, but not limited to, single-family and multiple-family dwellings, places of business, public service facilities, churches and other institutions, but shall not include accessory buildings on the same lot as a principal structure.
B.
Usage. The word "shall" is construed as mandatory.
From and after the effective date of this chapter, the township shall assign street or road numbers to all buildings in the township which have heretofore not been numbered and shall give notice to the registered owner and to the occupant of each building of the number so assigned; provided that nothing herein contained shall be construed to relieve such owner and occupant of the duty to ascertain such assigned street number.
Within 60 days from the effective date hereof, every owner and occupant of every building within the township shall cause the number so assigned or heretofore assigned to be posted, painted or carved upon the street side of the building or on the entrance gatepost or on any permanent structure located between the building and the street on which it fronts, in such manner that it can be read during daylight hours from the road or street by persons of normal vision. Nothing in this chapter shall require a school, church or public building or other institution to display the assigned number if in lieu thereof a sign so placed identifying the building which can be read during daylight hours from the road or street by persons of normal vision.
In all cases of new construction, the township shall assign a number at the time the building permit is issued, and such number shall be displayed no later than the time the building is ready for use and occupancy.
[Amended 5-19-1986 by Ord. No. 165; 1-2-1989 by Ord. No. 184]
Any owner or occupant who fails to display or to maintain a street number in accordance with this chapter shall be given notice by the Township Police Department to comply with this chapter and, upon failure to comply within 30 days after said notice, shall be in violation of the provisions of this chapter and shall, upon summary conviction before a District Justice, be punishable for each offense by a fine of not more than $600 and costs of prosecution or, upon default in payment of the fine and costs, by imprisonment in the county jail for not more than 30 days.
