[HISTORY: Adopted by the Board of Trustees of the Village of Chittenango 10-27-1998 by L.L. No. 6-1998. Amendments noted where applicable.]
The Board of the Village of Chittenango has determined that it is cost effective and desirable to the residents of the village that the terms of its elected officials be four years. Village elections over the last 10 or more years have had little or no contest and incumbents have been unopposed. The Board of Trustees has changed when incumbents have chosen to resign or not seek subsequent office. During the same time, the expense of holding annual elections has been increasing. The cost of annual elections, where there have been no contests for years, is deemed to be a waste of taxpayer money and needless expenditure of time to prepare for and conduct such elections by village employees.
Pursuant to Village Law § 3-302(5)(a), except as stated § 33-4 hereof, the terms of office of the Mayor and the Trustees of the Village of Chittenango elected hereafter shall be four years.
Except for Trustees whose terms expire in 1999, pursuant to Village Law § 3-302(7)(a), village general elections shall be conducted biennially in even-numbered years hereafter.
Pursuant to Village Law § 3-302(7)(b), the initial terms of Trustees whose terms expire in 1999 shall be three years, but their successors shall thereafter be elected for terms of four years.
Pursuant to Village Law § 3-302(5)(a) and (7)(a), this chapter is subject to permissive referendum.[1]
