[HISTORY: Adopted by the Board of Supervisors of the Township of Hempfield 5-10-1956 as Ord. No. 56-1. Section 37-2 amended at time of adoption of Code; see Ch. 1, General Provisions, Art. I. Other amendments noted where applicable.]
It shall be unlawful for any person or persons to permit any dog, cat or any other animal in the nature of a pet owned by him or them or under his or their supervision or control to run at large either upon the public streets or highways of Hempfield Township, upon the private property of any other person or persons or upon any property other than property belonging to the owner or owners of such animals or to persons under whose supervision or control such animals are being kept.

Any person or persons owning or having supervision or control of any dog, cat or other animal in the nature of a pet which is found running at large in violation of § 37-1 hereof shall, when found by the District Justice to have violated this chapter, be subject to a civil fine of not less than $50 nor more than $600, plus all court costs and reasonable attorney's fees incurred by Hempfield Township in the enforcement of this chapter in a civil enforcement proceeding.
The provisions of this chapter shall apply to all dogs, cats and other animals in the nature of pets found running at large in violation of § 37-1 hereof, irrespective of payment for or issuance of any license in respect to the animals involved.
The Board of Supervisors is hereby empowered to appoint by resolution such officers as it shall deem necessary to enforce the provisions of this chapter and the dog laws of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania[1] and provide compensation for same from the general funds of the township.
