Hereafter, in the event that any vacancy occurs
in Town Board membership, including the Supervisor, from whatever
cause, the remaining members on the Town Board shall, within 20 days
after receipt of a list of nominees as hereinafter provided, appoint
an individual to fill the vacant office until such time as a duly
elected successor takes office as a result of a special or general
election for the office held on the first Tuesday of November. Said
appointment shall be made by a majority vote of the remaining Town
Board members from a list of two or more nominees of qualified residents,
which list shall be provided by the applicable ward or Town committee
of the major political party that endorsed the Town Board member whose
seat has become vacant. If the vacancy occurred in a Town Board position
for which neither major political party gave its endorsement, then
the appointment may be made by a majority of the remaining Town members
without regard to any list of nominees.

Pursuant to Municipal Home Rule and the Suburban
Town Law, this article shall limit the number of consecutive terms
that a Councilperson may serve to five terms or a total of 10 years.
This article shall take effect January 1, 2000.

The purpose of the term limit for the Town Supervisor
is to limit to three the number of consecutive terms the Town Supervisor
can serve, for a maximum of 12 consecutive years.

The Town Supervisor shall serve a four-year
term. No person shall serve as Town Supervisor for more than three
consecutive terms. If a person fills a vacancy in the office of Town
Supervisor and more than two years remain in that term, such person
shall be eligible to serve two additional four-year terms; if less
than two years remain in that term, such person shall be eligible
to serve three additional four-year terms. Any person who has served
as Town Supervisor for three consecutive terms or the equivalent,
as prescribed above, shall thereafter be disqualified to serve as
Town Supervisor for a period of four years.
