The following projections may be permitted over a street beyond the street line when approved by the Village Board of Trustees:
A. 
Areaways, immediately outside the building and enclosed by substantial walls, not more than three feet, provided that every such areaway shall be covered over at the street level by an approved grating of metal or other incombustible material of sufficient strength to carry safely the pedestrian street traffic.
B. 
Balustrades of an ornamental character, including the sills and brackets on which they rest, moldings, belt courses, cornices, lintels, sills, pediments and similar projections of a decorative character, not more than 12 inches, at levels which are at least eight feet above the sidewalk level.
C. 
Permanent awnings, canopies and marquees, extending across the sidewalk, but in no case nearer than two feet to the curb, in connection with entrances to buildings, not less than eight feet above the sidewalk at all points for awnings and canopies and not less than 10 feet above the sidewalk at all points for marquees, provided that they shall be constructed of iron and glass or other incombustible materials and securely supported from the building and are properly drained; provided, further, that no awning, canopy or marquee shall extend along the street wall of a building for more than 75% of the length of such wall nor, in any case, more than 50 feet and that there shall be a clear distance of not less than four feet between any two stationary awnings, canopies or marquees on the same building. As used herein, the terms "awning," "canopy" and "marquee" shall have the following meanings:
AWNING
Any permanent roof-like covering of material attached to a metal or other frame and supported entirely from a building or other structure, whether collapsible or not collapsible.
CANOPY
Any permanent roof-like structure projecting beyond a building or extending along and projecting beyond the wall of a building, generally designed and constructed to provide protection from the weather. For purposes of this chapter, the term "canopy" shall not include the term "marquee."
MARQUEE
Any permanent roof-like structure projecting beyond a building or extending along and projecting beyond the wall of a building at the entrance to a building used for theater or other similar entertainment venue purposes. If such a structure is attached to the building at any other location or is attached to a building used for any other purposes, it shall be considered a "canopy" for the purposes of this chapter.
D. 
Collapsible or removable awnings of a semipermanent character extending wholly or in part across the sidewalk and not less than seven feet above the sidewalk at all points, provided that they shall be securely supported from the building and shall not extend along the street wall of any building for more than 30 feet and that there shall be a clear distance of not less than two feet between any two such semipermanent awnings.
E. 
Vaults, entirely below the sidewalk level and not extending beyond the curbline. Openings in the roofs of vaults shall be normally kept closed with substantial covers.
F. 
Hose connections for interior fire-extinguishing equipment projecting through a street wall not more than two inches beyond the street line.
The following projections shall be permitted over a street beyond the street line, provided that a sign permit has been issued in accordance with the provisions of Chapter 148, Signs and Outdoor Display Structures, of the Village Code:
A. 
Banner, as defined in Chapter 148, Signs and Outdoor Display Structures, of the Village Code.
B. 
Barberpole, as defined in Chapter 148, Signs and Outdoor Display Structures, of the Village Code.
C. 
Canopy sign, as defined in Chapter 148, Signs and Outdoor Display Structures, of the Village Code, provided that such sign is displayed on a canopy approved in accordance with the provisions of § 98-43C of this chapter.
D. 
Interim sign, as defined in Chapter 148, Signs and Outdoor Display Structures, of the Village Code.
E. 
Marquee sign, as defined in Chapter 148, Signs and Outdoor Display Structures, of the Village Code, provided that such sign is displayed on a marquee approved in accordance with the provisions of § 98-43C of this chapter.
F. 
Projecting sign, as defined in Chapter 148, Signs and Outdoor Display Structures, of the Village Code.
G. 
Wall sign, as defined in Chapter 148, Signs and Outdoor Display Structures, of the Village Code.
A written permit shall first be obtained from the Village Board of Trustees before any of the projections mentioned in the preceding section may be built, constructed, hung or erected. Such permit may be granted upon such terms and conditions as the Village Board of Trustees may fix and may be revoked at any time at the option of the Village Board of Trustees. When so revoked, the projections affected shall be removed by the owners within the time limit stipulated by the Village Board of Trustees.
No alterations or enlargements shall be made to any existing part of a building now projecting beyond the street line, except in conformity with the provisions of this chapter so far as it affects new construction.
Such parts of buildings which have, since March 18, 1946, projected beyond the street line may be maintained as constructed until their removal is directed by the Village Board of Trustees.
