The word "building," as used in this chapter, shall mean any structure used or intended to be used as a dwelling or place of business or industry, including public buildings and places of worship, but shall not include any accessory building located upon a lot where there is also a main building.
The Township Secretary is hereby required to prepare a numbering plan for the Township and to assign numbers to all lots and buildings located therein, such numbers to be assigned in accordance with the system herein prescribed.
A.
Upon all streets extending east and west, the numbering system shall commence at the eastern boundary of the township, with the number "one" or an appropriate larger number for streets whose beginning point extends beyond the township boundary, and shall increase westwardly therefrom. The allotment of numbers shall be made as nearly as practicable using or allotting separate numbers for each 40 feet for each side of street frontage. On all such streets, the odd numbers shall be on the north side and the even numbers on the south side thereof.
B.
Upon all streets extending north and south, the numbering system shall commence at the southern boundary of the township, commencing with the number "one" or an appropriate larger number for streets whose beginning point extends beyond the township boundary, and shall increase northwardly therefrom. The allotment of numbers shall be made as nearly as practicable using or allotting separate numbers for each 40 feet for each side of street frontage. On all such streets, the odd numbers shall be on the east side and the even numbers on the west side thereof.
C.
Upon all streets not running in a generally north-south or east-west direction or in any way not conforming to the general pattern of street arrangement in the Township, numbers shall be allotted by the Secretary as nearly as practicable to accord using or allotting separate numbers for each 40 feet for each side of street frontage and with numbers used on neighboring streets running in approximately the same direction. Streets ending at a cul-de-sac or dead end shall be numbered starting with the low numbers at the intersecting street and increase toward the cul-de-sac or dead end. On all such streets the odd numbers shall be on the north or east side and the even numbers shall be on the south or west side.
[Amended 7-7-2015 by Ord. No. 365]
Numbers shall be assigned to all existing buildings in the township by the Township Secretary as soon as possible after the adoption of this chapter, and the Township Secretary shall thereupon send to the owner of every lot upon which a building is located a written notice of the number assigned to such building, directing that such number be affixed to such building or elsewhere upon the property in the manner prescribed by this chapter within 30 days of such notice. Every property owner who shall disregard or fail to comply with such notice within the time specified therein shall be guilty of a violation of this chapter.
[Amended 7-7-2015 by Ord. No. 365]
Numbers assigned to buildings in the Township according to the provisions hereof shall be affixed to, painted upon or carved upon such building or upon a permanent standard, base or support between such building and the street upon which it fronts. Address numbers should be in Arabic numbers and not in alphabetical letters. Each number shall be at least four inches in height, shall be located a minimum of three feet above the ground, and in such manner, and shall be of such color and material as to be visible both day and night from the street and shall be constantly maintained in complete and legible form. The property owner shall from time to time reaffix or renew all numbers that shall not continue to conform to the requirements of this section; provided, however, that in the case of a building occupied by other than the owner thereof, the occupant, in addition to the owner, shall be responsible for maintaining the number upon such building as hereby required.
Whenever a building permit shall be sought for the erection of any building in the township, the applicant shall, at the time of making such application, apply to the Township Secretary for an assignment of an official number or numbers to the building or buildings covered by such application. The number or numbers so assigned by the Secretary shall be in conformity with the requirements of this chapter for numbering existing buildings, shall be affixed by the owner or builder thereof within 30 days after such assignment and shall thereafter be maintained as herein required.
