There is hereby created the position of Alternate Municipal Prosecutor. The Alternate Municipal Prosecutor shall be an attorney at law of the State of New Jersey. The Alternate Municipal Prosecutor shall meet all of the requirements pertaining to the office of Municipal Prosecutor.
The Alternate Municipal Prosecutor shall act in the place and stead of the Municipal Prosecutor in the event of the unavailability of the Municipal Prosecutor. When acting as Municipal Prosecutor, the Alternate Municipal Prosecutor shall have all of the powers and duties of the Municipal Prosecutor as set forth in Article XXI of this chapter. In the event of a vacancy in the office of Municipal Prosecutor, the Alternate Municipal Prosecutor shall serve as Acting Municipal Prosecutor until such time as a successor Municipal Prosecutor is appointed and qualified.
The Alternate Municipal Prosecutor shall be appointed by the Township Committee by a majority vote for the term of one year beginning the first day of January of each year and until such time as a successor is appointed and qualified. A vacancy in the office shall be filled for the unexpired term only.

The Alternate Municipal Prosecutor shall receive such compensation as is set forth in the annual budget and salary or similar ordinance of the Township of Cranford and shall be paid only for services rendered. In the event that the Alternate Municipal Prosecutor shall serve as Acting Municipal Prosecutor, due to a vacancy in the office of Municipal Prosecutor, the Alternate Municipal Prosecutor shall be entitled to the compensation of the office of Municipal Prosecutor for such time as he or she shall serve as Municipal Prosecutor and until a successor Municipal Prosecutor is appointed and qualified.
