The office of Director of Public Safety of the Township of Pennsauken is hereby created in and for said Township.

A. 
The Director of Public Safety shall be appointed by the Township Committee for a period of one year commencing on the first day of January of each year, except that the original appointment to fill the post shall be from the date of appointment to December 31 of that same year. In the event that one Director of Public Safety replaces another Director of Public Safety for whatever reason, then and in said event said new appointee shall be for the unexpired term only.
B. 
The Director of Public Safety shall receive such compensation as shall be prescribed by the Salary Ordinance of the Township of Pennsauken.[1]

The Director of Public Safety shall maintain his or her office at the municipal building or at such other location as is approved by the Township Committee.

The Director of Public Safety shall, to the extent not prohibited by law:
A. 
Assist and consult with the Public Safety Department Heads (Fire, Police, EMS) in organizing, developing, directing, supervising, and performing work involved in the management of the Department of Public Safety.
B. 
Provide consultation and initial approvals of department budgets.
C. 
Provide consultation and approval(s) of progressive discipline issued to employees.
D. 
Provide consultation on the development of operational policy, work programs, and budgetary policies.
E. 
Evaluate the effectiveness of work programs, and procedures of all divisions and units within the Public Safety Departments.
F. 
Develop effective work methods for subordinates.
G. 
Undertake special studies pertaining to public safety functions.
H. 
Establish and maintain helpful and cooperative relations with civic and business organizations, schools, and court offices and other groups, police, fire and EMS departments in other jurisdictions, and others interested in the maintenance of public safety.
I. 
Issue assignments to Public Safety Department Heads.
J. 
Prepare reports as directed.
K. 
Direct the establishment and maintenance of records and files.

The position of Director of Public Safety shall be an annual appointment completed by the Township Committee.
The Director of Public Safety shall perform his or her duties in accordance herewith and shall be subject to and answerable to the Township Committee only.
Nothing herein shall derogate from or authorize the Director of Public Safety to exercise the powers and duties of the elected officials of the Township and of the boards and commissions thereof established pursuant to law.
