Borough of Indiana, PA Traffic Regulations

No person shall operate any motor vehicle longitudinally upon any sidewalk in the Borough; nor shall any person operate any motor vehicle upon or across any sidewalk except in order to gain access to or egress from a driveway or alley at such locations where the curb, if such sidewalk is curbed, shall have been properly cut down for the purpose. Any person who shall violate any provision of this section shall, upon conviction thereof, be sentenced to pay a fine of not more than $50 and costs of prosecution, and, in default of payment of such fine and costs, to imprisonment for not more than 10 days.

§ 440-7 Speed limits.

In accordance with the authority of Title 75 (Pennsylvania Vehicle Code), Chapter 33, Section 3362(a)(1.2),[1] pertaining to the establishment of speed limits within a residence district, when the highway is not a numbered traffic route and is functionally classified by the Department of Transportation as a local highway, the speed limit of 25 miles per hour is established for all such streets of the Borough of Indiana.

In accordance with Title 75 (Pennsylvania Vehicle Code), Chapter 33, Section 3362(b)(1),[2] pertaining to the posting of established speed limits, the Indiana Borough Police Department shall be responsible, under the authority set forth under Title 75, to enforce speed limits within the Borough of Indiana when said limits are posted in a manner prescribed by regulations set forth in Title 75.

Any person who shall operate a vehicle or tractor at a speed in excess of that hereby established therefor, upon any of the portions of highways herein specified, upon conviction thereof, be sentenced to pay a fine of $10 and costs of prosecution, and, in default of payment of such fine and costs, to imprisonment for not more than five days.

§ 440-8 Traffic signals.

At the following intersections, official traffic signals shall be erected (or if heretofore erected are hereby ratified) and traffic at such intersections shall be directed by such signals:

Any operator of a vehicle or tractor who shall disobey the directions of any traffic signal shall, upon conviction thereof, be sentenced to pay a fine of $5 and costs of prosecution, and, in default of payment of such fine and costs, to imprisonment for not more than three days.

§ 440-9 Permitted right turns.

A right turn shall be permitted at the following locations:

§ 440-10 U-turns prohibited.

It shall be unlawful for the operator of any vehicle or tractor to make a U-turn anywhere upon any highway in the Borough. Any person who shall violate any provision of this section shall, upon conviction thereof, be sentenced to pay a fine of not more than $10 and costs of prosecution, and, in default of payment of such fine and costs, to imprisonment for not more than five days.

The following intersections are hereby established as stop intersections and official stop signs shall be erected (or are hereby confirmed if heretofore erected) in such a position so as to face traffic approaching the second-named highway upon the first-named highway, in the direction or directions hereby indicated. Any operator of a vehicle or tractor who shall fail to come to a full stop, within a reasonable distance, before entering any such stop intersection, as hereinabove required, shall, upon conviction thereof, be sentenced to pay a fine of $5 and costs of prosecution, and, in default of payment of such fine and costs, to imprisonment for not more than three days.

§ 440-13 Weights of vehicles limited.

It shall be unlawful for any person to operate any vehicle or tractor, or tractor-trailer combination, having a gross weight in excess of that herein respectively prescribed, upon any of the following portions of highways, except where the operation of such vehicle or tractor, or tractor-trailer combination shall be for the purpose of picking up or delivering goods, wares, merchandise or material from or to any premises located upon such portion of highway:

Any person who shall violate any provision of this section shall, upon conviction thereof, be sentenced to pay a fine of not more than $50 and costs of prosecution, and, in default of payment of such fine and costs, to imprisonment for not more than 10 days.[1]

§ 440-14 Play highways authorized.

The Mayor is hereby authorized to designate as play highways, whenever he shall deem such action is advisable, and for whatever period of time directed by him, any portion of any highway in the Borough, whereon sledding and coasting shall be permitted. Such highway shall be set apart for the purpose under the direction of the Mayor. No person shall operate any motor vehicle or tractor upon any play highway at any time when such highway shall be so designated, except in case of emergency, with special permission of the Mayor or of the police officer in charge, who shall first clear such play highway of all persons using such highway for sledding or coasting. Any person who shall violate any provision of this section shall, upon conviction thereof, be sentenced to pay a fine of not more than $10 and costs of prosecution, and, in default of payment of such fine and costs, to imprisonment for not more than five days.
