In all buildings arranged for the use of one- or two-family
dwelling units, smoke detectors shall be required on every story of
each dwelling unit, including the basement. Where more than one smoke
detector is required to be installed within a building or dwelling
unit constructed after 1977, the detectors shall be wired in such
a manner that the activation of one alarm will activate all the alarms
in the building.
Smoke detectors shall be installed in a manner and location
approved by the Fire Official/Fire Marshal/Fire Code Official and
in compliance with the applicable sections of NFPA No. 74, Standard
for the Installation, Maintenance, and Use of Household Fire Warning
Equipment, and the New Jersey Uniform Construction Code and the New
Jersey Fire Code.
No single-family or two-family dwelling unit shall be sold, and no structural change or repair of a value in excess of $500 shall be made to any such unit, unless and until such unit meets the requirements of §
161-3.
