There is hereby established the position of adult school crossing guard in the Borough of Edgewater. The number of adult school crossing guards shall be determined on an annual basis by the Mayor and Council.

Adult school crossing guards shall be appointed by the Mayor and Council, which appointment shall be for a term of one year in accordance with the provisions of N.J.S.A. 40A:9-154.1. Prior to the appointment of an individual to said position, the Chief of Police and/or Police Director shall ascertain the eligibility of the application and make a report to the governing body and Borough Administrator of the suitability of said applicant for appointment to said position.
An applicant for the position of adult school crossing guard shall be required to be a citizen and resident of the State of New Jersey, be of sound body and of good health, shall be of good moral character and shall not have been convicted of any criminal offense involving moral turpitude.

An adult school crossing guard shall not have the right to bear firearms or the power of arrest and shall be under the supervision and direction of the Chief of Police and/or Police Director or his designee. An adult school crossing guard shall only perform the duties of such position within the Borough of Edgewater and shall comply with the rules and regulations applicable to the conduct and decorum of the regular police officers of the Borough.
The position of adult school crossing guard shall be paid a salary as shall be set forth in the annual Salary Ordinance of the Borough of Edgewater.
