Members of this Department shall wear, at all times while on duty, the uniform prescribed by the Chief of Police, unless otherwise directed.
The Chief of Police shall establish the uniform of the day by the promulgation of special orders to this effect:
A. 
The uniform shall be maintained in a neat, clean and serviceable condition, and no part thereof shall be worn at any time in conjunction with civilian clothing.
B. 
Black socks shall be worn in conjunction with the uniform of the day.
C. 
A member of the Department may be excused from wearing black socks with the uniform of the day if he has a physician's written statement certifying that he should be permitted to wear white socks because of a medical reason filed in his personal file.
A. 
All clothing and articles of equipment issued by this Department are, at all times, the property of the Village of Sag Harbor and are subject to recall, inspection and disposition at any time.
B. 
When a member terminates his service in any manner, his commanding officer shall be responsible for the return of all clothing and articles of equipment issued to him.
C. 
When a member of the Department is promoted and certain articles of clothing and equipment are no longer required in order to function in his new assignment, such articles shall be returned in a clean condition to his commanding officer.
Every member is personally responsible for the proper and authorized use of his uniform and equipment.
No emblem, patch or ornament shall be worn unless authorized by the Chief of Police.
If any member of the Department loses his shield, emblem, identification card or any insignia of this Department, a report shall be filed immediately via official channels to the Chief of Police.
Articles of clothing include but are not limited to all types of uniforms and wearing apparel, except shoes, specialized or otherwise. Articles of equipment include but are not limited to shield, cap device, insignia of rank, departmental identification card, rules and procedures, memorandum books and all inserts completed during that member's service, firearms and any or all other specialized equipment.
A. 
Members of the Department shall wear the prescribed departmental patch on the left sleeve of all prescribed uniforms, except raincoats of any type, winter coats and leather jackets. The top center of this patch is worn 1/2 inch below the shoulder seam in line with the center of the sleeve. Other special-type insignia shall be worn as directed.
B. 
Crossing guards shall wear the uniform as prescribed by the Chief of Police, except that the badge will be inscribed "School Crossing Guard" and "Special" or "Auxiliary."
(1) 
Women shall wear prescribed hat, skirt and/or pants and blouse.
C. 
Members of the Department shall wear the prescribed insignia designating their rank:
(1) 
Chief of Police: one gold star, evenly spaced, on each shoulder.
(2) 
Sergeant: one three-stripe chevron displayed on each sleeve, six inches below the shoulder seam, the upper point of the chevron in line with the lower point of the prescribed departmental insignia.
D. 
All ranks above Sergeant shall wear, on the prescribed uniform coats, a band of lustrous black mohair braid, 1 1/4 inches wide, placed with its lower edge 3 1/2 inches above the bottom of the sleeve. A black mohair braid, 1/4 inches wide, shall cover the outside vertical seam of the prescribed uniform trousers.
(1) 
The Sergeant rank shall wear a black mohair braid, 3/8 inch wide, which shall cover the outside vertical seam of the prescribed uniform trousers.
(2) 
The prescribed uniform cap for the rank of Sergeant and above shall be furnished with a gold-colored chin strap.
E. 
Members of the Department shall carry their shields at all times.
(1) 
When in uniform, the shield shall be worn on the outermost garment over the left breast in the place provided.
(2) 
When not in uniform, the shield shall be displayed on the outermost garment when it is necessary for a member of the Department to establish his official identity.
F. 
Members of the Department on duty shall carry the following equipment in serviceable condition or as otherwise directed:
(1) 
A Colt Trooper Mark III .357 magnum revolver, with a four-inch barrel, fully loaded with six rounds.
(2) 
Ammunition as prescribed by the Chief of Police, with 12 extra cartridges.
(3) 
Holster with belt.
(4) 
Chemical mace with holster.
(5) 
Memorandum book.
(6) 
Ballpoint pen.
(7) 
Billy.
(8) 
Handcuffs and key.
(9) 
Traffic whistle.
(10) 
Flashlight (4:00 p.m. to 12:00 midnight and 12:00 midnight to 8:00 a.m.).
(11) 
Nightstick (baton) as ordered.
G. 
Members, when off duty and not in uniform, may carry a fully loaded .38 special caliber, Smith and Wesson or Colt revolver with not less than a two-inch barrel with a safety bar and six extra .38 special caliber cartridges. Any .38 special cartridges, carried by members of this Department, shall be one-hundred-twenty-five grain, .38 special semijacketed hollow-point ammunition issued by this Department, unless specifically authorized by the Chief of Police.
H. 
Members of the Department on special assignment, whether in uniform or not, shall carry such weapons and special equipment as directed by the commanding officer making such assignment.
I. 
Nightsticks (batons) shall be carried by members of the Department when in uniform and on duty during the 4:00 p.m. to 12:00 midnight and 12:00 midnight to 8:00 a.m. tours or as otherwise directed.
J. 
Members of the Department shall immediately report to their supervising officer the loss, damage to or unserviceable condition of their uniforms and articles of equipment, as outlined by these rules and procedures.
K. 
Members of the Department who are recipients of awards shall be awarded a metal breast bar and shall wear same at all times in uniform, except on raincoats of any type, officers' white shirts and sweaters. The bar is worn horizontally, 1/2 inch above the shield and centered. Only one bar is worn, regardless of the number of awards. Additional awards are designated by oak-leaf clusters.
L. 
The insignia for marksmanship shall be worn 1/2 inch above the shield, centered, and shall be worn in conjunction with the departmental recognition insignia. Where more than one insignia is worn, they shall be separated by 1/2 inch. When more than one insignia is worn, the order of procedure is:
(1) 
Department recognition bar (top).
(2) 
Marksmanship insignia.
A. 
Class A uniform, summer.
(1) 
Sergeant and police officer: blue short-sleeve shirt, trousers, black shoes, eight-point cap and rainwear for inclement weather.
(2) 
Blue tie and blouse shall be permissible for Sergeants and police officers whenever weather is unseasonable during the summer uniform-of-the-day wearing period.
B. 
Class A uniform, intermediate.
(1) 
Sergeant and police officer: blue long-sleeve shirt, blue tie, blouse, trousers, black shoes, eight-point cap and rainwear for inclement weather.
C. 
Class A uniform, winter.
(1) 
Sergeant and police officer: blue long-sleeve shirt, blue tie, trousers, reefer, black shoes, eight-point cap and rainwear for inclement weather.
D. 
Members of the Department, while in uniform, shall wear plain black leather gloves, except when wearing the summer uniform and directing traffic. Members of the Department, when directing traffic, shall wear white gloves.
E. 
The uniform-issue blue sweater or insulated vest may be worn any time, provided that it is worn under an outer garment, such as a blouse, reefer, raincoat or officer's utility coat.
