It shall be the duty of the owner or owners of every store,
residence or other building now or hereafter erected within the Borough
of Hellertown to have conspicuously placed upon it, within 20 days
after completion of the building or within 20 days after notice from
the Borough to do so, the number of the building. Buildings shall
have approved address numbers placed in a position to be plainly legible
and visible from the street or road fronting the property. These numbers
shall contrast with their background. Address numbers shall be Arabic
numerals or alphabet letters. Numbers shall be a minimum of four inches
(102 mm) high with a minimum stroke width of 0.5 inch (12.7 mm).

The number required to be fixed or placed upon any building
as aforesaid shall be given by the Borough Engineer, and after such
number shall have been determined, the Borough Secretary shall give
notice to the owner or owners of improved property who shall have
failed to comply with the several sections of this chapter to have
the proper number or numbers placed or put up in accordance with the
provisions of this chapter within 20 days after such notice has been
given to the owner or owners of any building as aforesaid, and if
he, she or they shall neglect or refuse to comply with the same, he,
she or they shall, upon conviction thereof, be sentenced to pay a
fine of not more than $1,000 plus costs and, in default of payment
of said fine and costs, to a term of imprisonment not to exceed 30
days. Each day that a violation of this chapter continues or each
section of this chapter which shall be found to have been violated
shall constitute a separate offense.
The plan or system of numbering of houses or buildings shall
be as follows:
There shall not be more than 100 numbers between one street
and the next one, and the first house or building on each side of
the street at each corner in its proper direction shall always be
1, 101, 201, 301, 401, and etc., and 2, 102, 202, 302, 402, and etc.
On streets and alleys running eastwardly and westwardly, Main Street
shall be the dividing line, and any and all portions of any street
intersecting or running from the said Main Street, that portion extending
eastwardly from the said Main Street shall be known as East _____
Street and that portion of any street extending westwardly from the
said Main Street shall be known as West _____ Street. On any street
extending eastwardly from the said Main Street, the first door on
the northerly side shall be No. 1, and the first door on the southerly
side shall be No. 2, these numbers to continue until the next street
is reached, where the first door as aforesaid shall be No. 101 and
102, respectively. On any street extending westwardly from said Main
Street, the first house on the northerly side shall be No. 1 and that
on the southerly side No. 2 and to continue in the manner as set forth
above.

On streets and alleys running north and south, and all that
run in a general northerly or southerly direction, the numbering of
the house and buildings shall be in the same order as those running
eastwardly and westwardly, the numbers 1, 3, 5, 7 on the east side
of the street and the numbers 2, 4, 6, 8 on the west side of the street;
No. 100 to start at Walnut Street.
