The following professional designations shall be required to register with the Codes Office prior to commencement of any work or activity:
A. 
Automatic fire suppression systems: for installation or modification of commercial cooking fire suppression systems or industrial fire suppression systems, excluding fire sprinkler systems. (NFPA 1-13.1.1.1; 50.4.2)
B. 
Exhibit, trade show, special outdoor events, carnivals and fairs: for operation of all exhibits and trade shows held within a jurisdiction, to conduct a special outdoor event, carnival or fair. (NFPA 1-10.15.1; 20.1.4.5.1)
C. 
Explosives: For the manufacture, sale, disposal, purchase, storage, use, possession or transport of explosives within the jurisdiction. (NFPA 1-65.9.2)
D. 
Fire alarm and detection systems: For installation or modification of fire alarm and detection systems and related equipment. (NFPA 1-13.1.1.1)

A. 
Campfires (over three feet by three feet), bonfires and all other fires. Kindling or maintaining any open fire on either public or private property within the City of Sanford must have a valid written or digital fire permit. Instructions and stipulations on the permit shall be adhered to. Fire permits shall only be issued to property owners. Renters, lessees or contractors may have written permission of property owner to obtain a fire permit where the burning operation is to occur.

Fire permits for campfires or fires for cooking purposes or any other purpose can be issued online (www.wardenreport.com or www.maineburnpermit.com). These fires must be wood only and be contained within a metal, masonry or stone fireplace, pit or ring. Note, Maine prohibits burning within barrels.
C. 
In some cases, the Fire Chief (City Fire Warden) or designee may require inspection of the site prior to burning.
D. 
The Fire Chief (City Fire Warden) or designee may prohibit any or all outdoor fires within the City of Sanford.
E. 
Any person burning without a permit or allowing a fire to escape due to negligence or not following the safety requirements listed on the permit shall be liable for response and suppression costs. All open burning shall be in conformity with existing laws and regulations of the Maine Forest Service, Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry. In accordance with Title 12 § 9325 of the Maine statutes, the out-of-door burning of plastic, rubber, styrofoam, metals, food wastes, chemicals, treated wood or other solid wastes, except for wood wastes, is prohibited in all areas of the state. Any person who engages in out-of-door burning or who fails to comply with any stated permit condition or restriction commits a Class E crime.
