This article shall apply to locations or areas where the following
activities are regularly carried on:
A.Â
The application of flammable or combustible paint, varnish, lacquer,
stain or other flammable or combustible liquid applied as a spray
in continuous or intermittent processes.
B.Â
Dip-tank operations in which articles or materials are passed through
contents of tanks, vats or containers of flammable or combustible
liquids, including coating, finishing, treating and similar processes.
A.Â
It shall be unlawful to operate a finishing shop, spray booth or
dip tank without first having obtained a permit from the Fire Commissioner.
Application for such permit shall be on a form supplied by the Fire
Commissioner and shall be accompanied by a permit fee. No such permit
or renewal shall be issued until the Fire Commissioner, after inspection,
has been satisfied that all provisions of the New York Uniform Code
and this chapter have been complied with.

Application for a permit shall be accompanied by plans and specifications
showing all essential details and fire protection for safe operation.
Smoking shall be prohibited. Signs stating "No Smoking by Order
of the Fire Commissioner," with letters of approved size, shall be
conspicuously posted.
Conspicuous signs shall be posted in the vicinity of all spraying
areas, dipping operations and paint-storage rooms, conveying the following
warning:
NO WELDING

The use of welding or cutting equipment in or near this area
is dangerous because of fire and explosion. Welding and cutting shall
be done only under the supervision of the foreman in charge.
