[Adopted 6-27-2006 by Res. No. 786-2006 (Ch. 852 of the 1985 Code)]
It shall be the policy of the County of Suffolk to name and/or rename County roads, or portions thereof, in honor of Suffolk County residents who lost their lives while defending our nation in a war zone as a member of the United States Armed Forces.
The Commissioner of the Department of Public Works is hereby authorized and empowered to recommend to this Legislature the naming or renaming of County roads, as the opportunity arises, for these deceased Suffolk County veterans.
To the extent possible, the individuals honored by such naming or renaming should be closely connected to the community in which the roadway is located.
Such naming or renaming may only be accomplished through a duly enacted resolution of this Legislature.
The policy established by this article shall not preclude the naming or renaming of County roads in honor of other worthy individuals.
