The City of North Adams Council for the Aging is established
in accordance with the provisions of Section 8B of Chapter 40 of the
General Laws.

The City of North Adams, Council for the Aging shall consist
of 11 permanent members to be appointed by the Mayor for terms of
five years from the first Monday of January and until their successors
are appointed. The present members of such Council for the Aging shall
continue until the expiration of the terms for which they were appointed.
The six new members authorized by this section may be appointed immediately
and two of such new members shall be appointed for a term of one year,
one for a term of two years, one for a term of three years, one for
a term of four years, and one for a term of five years. As the terms
of the members of the Council expire, their successors shall be appointed
for five-year terms. In addition to the 11 permanent members, there
shall be as many associate members as shall be deemed expedient for
carrying out the aims and purposes of the Council for the Aging. The
members of the Council shall serve without compensation and shall
be residents of the City.
As soon as possible after the members of the Council for the
Aging have been qualified, they shall organize by choice of one of
them to serve as Chairman, and, thereafter, shall organize annually
before the first Monday in February.
The Council for the Aging shall act in an advisory and consultive
capacity with the general object of coordinating with all departments
and state agencies programs designed to meet the problems of the aging
and may promote, assist and coordinate activities designed to meet
such problems on the local level. Subject to appropriation by the
Mayor and City Council, it may make such expenditures as may be necessary
to execute effectively the functions of the Council.
