Within the Borough of Mountville:
A. Kerosene heaters are prohibited in multifamily dwellings.
B. Kerosene heaters shall not be used as the only heat source, except
in an emergency.
C. Kerosene heaters shall be used only as supplemental heat sources.
D. Kerosene heater units shall be equipped with an automatic flame extinguisher
(shutoff switch) in case the heater tips over; an oxygen-depletion
sensor to shut off the heater in the event of oxygen depletion in
the area where it is being used; a removable fuel tank for outdoor
refilling; an accurate, easy to read fuel gage; and a safety grill
to prevent contact burns.
E. Kerosene fuel shall be stored in approved, properly labeled containers,
in well-ventilated storage areas, outside the house.
F. Kerosene heaters are required to be placed at least three feet from
any combustible materials.
G. Smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors shall be installed and
maintained in all areas in which a kerosene heater is used in any
structure.
H. Use of kerosene heaters is prohibited in bedrooms.
I. Proper building ventilation is required in all areas in which a kerosene
heater is used in any structure.

Mountville Borough Council recommends and shall offer courtesy inspections of any premises in which a kerosene heater is located. Nothing contained in this section, however, shall impair the ability of the Borough to enforce this Part
4.

Any person violating any provision of this Part 4 or any regulation
adopted hereunder shall, upon conviction, be sentenced to pay a fine
of not less than $300 and, in default of payment, shall be imprisoned
for not more than 10 days. After notice, each day's neglect to
comply with any provision of this Part 4 shall be deemed a separate
offense and shall be subject to all respects of the same penalty as
the first offense; and separate proceedings may be instituted and
separate penalties imposed for each day's violation after the
first conviction.
