The mayor shall have the power to appoint a City Attorney with the approval of the Council. The City Attorney must meet the requirements described in Section 115.010(A), hereof and shall be learned in the law and a licensed and practicing attorney in the State of Missouri at the time of her/her appointment. The City Attorney shall serve at the pleasure of the Mayor and Council.

The City Attorney shall receive such compensation as may be determined by the City Council. He/she may upon request attend regular and special meetings of the City Council and Planning and Zoning Commission, and other City Government meetings, draft ordinances, leases, contracts and other legal documents; render legal advice to City Officials and process complaints of a legal nature relating to the operation of the City Government; work in connection with special tax bills, investigations or court work above the Municipal Court level; work in connection with the acquisition or sale of real estate provide services with respect to franchise ordinances, and advise the City on any other matter pertaining to the legal affairs of the City.

Upon the recommendation of the City Attorney, or whenever in their judgment the same may be necessary, the City Council may, appoint additional counsel. The counsel so employed shall be entitled to receive a reasonable fee for services. Nothing in this Section shall be construed to authorize the employment of additional counsel in prosecutions before the Municipal Judge.
