There is hereby established in and for the Township an Environmental
Commission.

The Environmental Commission shall be composed of not less than
three nor more than seven residents of the Township.
Members of the Environmental Commission shall be appointed in
accordance with the following procedures:
(a)
All Commission members shall be appointed by Council.
(b)
A Commission member's term of office shall expire on the first
Monday in January following the last year of his or her term of office
or whenever thereafter a successor is appointed.
(c)
Any vacancy created by death, resignation or other reason shall be
filled by Council for the remaining portion of the unexpired term.
(d)
Duly appointed Commission members shall serve a term of three years,
except that the initial appointments shall be so staggered that the
terms of approximately one-third of the membership shall expire each
year.
(e)
The Chairperson of the Commission shall be appointed by the Commission
membership. The Chairperson's term of office shall expire on
the first Monday of January of each year.
(f)
Council may remove any member for cause, such as malfeasance, misfeasance
or nonfeasance.
Members of the Environmental Commission shall receive no compensation
for their services, but may be reimbursed for the expenses actually
and necessarily incurred by them in the performance of their duties.

The Environmental Commission is to be advisory to and shall
coordinate its activities with the elected officials, the Planning
Commission, the Recreation Board and other such local governmental
agencies.

The Environmental Commission shall have the following powers:
(a)
Identify environmental problems.
(b)
Recommend plans and programs to the appropriate agencies for the
promotion and conservation of the natural resources and for the protection
and improvement of the quality of the environment within the area
of the Township.
(c)
Make recommendations as to the possible use of open land areas of
the Township.
(d)
Promote a community environmental program.
(e)
Keep an index of all open areas publicly or privately owned, including,
but not limited to, flood-prone areas, swamps and other unique natural
areas.
(f)
Advise the appropriate local governmental agencies in the acquisition
of property, both real and personal, by gift, purchase, grant, bequest,
easement, devise or lease, in matters within the powers granted to
the Commission by this chapter.

Undertake such environmental tasks as requested by Council.

The Environmental Commission shall keep records of its meetings
and activities and shall make an annual report, which shall be printed
in the Annual Township Report or otherwise made known and available.

Council may, from time to time, appropriate funds for the expenses
incurred by the Environmental Commission.
