There is hereby created the appointive office of City Treasurer. The Mayor shall, at the first (1st) meeting of the City Council after the general election at which a Mayor is elected or as soon thereafter as practical, with the consent or approval of the majority of the members elected to the City Council, appoint some suitable and competent person to the office of City Treasurer, who shall discharge such duties as are prescribed by law, together with such duties as are prescribed by the ordinances of the City of Trenton, Missouri. The person appointed shall hold office for a period of four (4) years and until his/her successor is appointed and qualified. Provided however, that person initially appointed to the office of the City Treasurer shall serve until his/her successor is duly appointed and qualified following the next regular City election at which a Mayor is elected.

Within fifteen (15) days after appointment and before entering upon the discharge of the duties of the office, the City Treasurer shall execute to the City a bond in a sum consistent with City policy, conditioned upon the faithful discharge of all the duties of such office, as required by State law, this Code and other ordinances of the City and that the City Treasurer will promptly pay over all monies coming into his/her possession that belong to the City, at the time and in the manner provided by law.

The City Treasurer is hereby expressly prohibited from using, either directly or indirectly, for his/her own benefit or for other purposes, the funds of the City in his/her custody or under his/her control. Any violation of this Section shall be deemed an ordinance violation. In addition thereto, the Treasurer shall be subject to removal from office in the manner provided in this Code and the Missouri State Statutes.

The compensation of the City Treasurer shall be fixed from time to time by the City Council.
