There is hereby created the office of assistant electrical inspector in the city.

The assistant electrical inspector shall be appointed by the mayor with the approval of a majority of the members of the board of aldermen and shall be a duly licensed electrical contractor, or a duly licensed electrical engineer, or a journeyman electrician in the state at least five (5) years prior to such appointment as assistant electrical inspector, or have qualifications of similar background and training.

(a) 
The assistant electrical inspector shall serve directly under the supervision of the city engineer, and the assistant electrical inspector shall have responsibility for making all electrical inspections, issuing electrical permits and performing all work and functions that may be necessary or required for the proper implementation of the electrical code and other ordinances of the city. The assistant electrical inspector may be overruled or his orders countermanded by the city engineer.
(b) 
The assistant electrical inspector shall make such reports to the mayor and board of aldermen or other officials of the city as may be directed by the mayor or board of aldermen.

The assistant electrical inspector shall receive a monthly salary as established by the board of aldermen from time to time.
