For the health, safety and general welfare of the citizens of the Town of Pittsfield, it is essential that all necessary steps to avoid groundwater contamination be taken.
All well and drill hole abandonment is strictly regulated and overseen by the State of Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, Wisconsin Administrative Code § NR 812.26.
All well and drill hole abandonment is the responsibility of the property owner. It is the responsibility of the property owner where such abandonment is to take place to contact the local Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources office for current regulations and recommendations on the process to be followed for the safe and permanent closing of any access to the groundwater resource.
Failure to comply with this article could result in Town of Pittsfield penalties as well as any applicable State of Wisconsin enforcement penalties. By order of the Town Board, a well may be ordered as abandoned and the Board may initiate actions to properly close said well.
