The Division of Traffic and Parking is hereby authorized to erect those signs and signals required under this chapter or which are necessary to make the provisions of this chapter effective. It shall be its duty to place and maintain, or cause to be placed and maintained, all official signs, markings and safety zones. All signs, signals, markings and safety zones shall conform to the standards as prescribed by the Department of Transportation of the commonwealth.

The location of all bus stops, taxicab stands and service zones shall be specified by the City Council, and in the case of taxicab stands the Traffic Commission shall designate who may use them.
No driver of any vehicle shall disobey the instructions of any official traffic control signal, sign, marking, marker or legend, unless otherwise directed by a police officer or unless otherwise permitted by this chapter.
A. 
Sections 70-5, 70-175, 70-222, 70-224, 70-313, 70-371, 70-376, 70-380, 70-384, 70-385 and 70-386A shall be effective only as to places where and during times when there are maintained in the affected areas and in each block thereof official signs designating the appropriate provisions of such sections and located with sufficient frequency and in such fashion as to be easily visible to approaching drivers.
B. 
Sections relating to one-way streets shall be effective as to each street only during such time as there are erected and maintained at each of the exits thereof a sufficient number of official signs so that one sign will be clearly visible at a distance of at least 75 feet to drivers approaching such an exit.
It shall be unlawful for any person to place or maintain or to display upon or in view of any street any unofficial sign, signal, marking or device which purports to be or is an imitation or resembles an official traffic sign, signal, marking or device or which attempts to direct the movement of traffic or which hides from view any official sign or signal. The Police Chief is hereby empowered to remove every such prohibited sign, signal, marking or device or cause it to be removed without notice.
It shall be unlawful for any person to willfully deface, injure, move, obstruct or interfere with any official traffic sign, signal or marking.
