To enhance the individual and collective safety and general welfare of all citizens of Little Egg Harbor Township, the Citizens on Patrol (COPs) program is hereby established under the guidance and supervision of the Police Department of Little Egg Harbor Township.
A. 
Members of COPs shall be appointed by the Chief of Police or his or her designee.
B. 
Members of COPs shall serve without compensation.
C. 
Application for appointment to the COPs program shall be in writing on a form supplied by the Little Egg Harbor Township Police Department. The application shall set forth the name, date of birth, and address of the applicant, whether or not he or she is a citizen of the United States, and whether or not he or she has ever been convicted of any crime(s), disorderly persons offense(s), or municipal ordinance violation(s), and the date(s) thereof.
D. 
Applicants to the COPs program shall be required to submit to a criminal history background check with periodic background check updates performed by the Little Egg Harbor Township Police Department.
A. 
The Chief of Police shall prescribe rules and regulations for the conduct of the COPs program.
B. 
Volunteers in the COPs program serve at the will and pleasure of the Chief of Police.
A. 
The Mayor shall annually appoint a member of the governing body to serve as liaison to the COPs. The liaison shall report to the governing body and the public on a monthly basis to advise on activities of the COPs.
B. 
The Chief of Police shall select a member of the Little Egg Harbor Township Police Department to serve as liaison from the Police Department to the COPs. The liaison shall report to the Chief of Police on a regular basis to advise on the activities of the COPs.
