A. 
Maximum sign height.
(1) 
Freestanding signs shall have a maximum height of eight feet.
(2) 
Monument signs shall have a maximum height of six feet.
B. 
Corner or waterfront lots.
(1) 
On corner lots, signs are allowed on both street sides of the building. On waterfront lots signs are allowed on both the street side and the waterfront side.
C. 
Signs designating OPEN shall have a maximum size of three feet by five feet and may be a flag, banner, or sign. Flags or banners displayed outside must be removed at the end of each business day.
D. 
Signs on windows are allowed a maximum window coverage of 25%.
E. 
Projecting signs are allowed a maximum of 12 square feet.
F. 
Sandwich board signs may be used by a business under the following restrictions:
(1) 
In addition to the maximum allowed signage for a business. a maximum of one sandwich board sign having a maximum of six square feet per side is allowed.
(2) 
The sign may be displayed during business hours and shall be removed at the close of business each day.
(3) 
The sign shall not impede pedestrian traffic.
G. 
Nothing in this section is intended to prohibit, restrict, or regulate the placement of signs on property within the Village as official notification for public hearings before the Joint Town of Clayton/Village of Clayton Planning Board or Zoning Board of Appeals.
H. 
Signs may be illuminated. Such illumination shall not have an adverse impact on adjacent properties or streets.
Temporary civic event signs may be sandwich board signs and/or banner signs under the following regulations:
A. 
Sandwich board signs shall meet the following requirements:
(1) 
The maximum sandwich board size shall be three feet by four feet with a maximum display area of two feet by three feet.
(2) 
They shall not be illuminated.
(3) 
They shall not impede pedestrian traffic on sidewalks.
(4) 
They shall not impede vehicular sight distance. They shall not be located within the clear sight triangle of an intersection of streets.
(5) 
They shall be constructed of weather-resistant materials.
(6) 
There shall be a limit of four sandwich board signs per event.
(7) 
There shall be a limited display period of 30 days prior to the event to three days after the completion of the event.
(8) 
A contact name shall be displayed on the Board.
B. 
Banner signs shall meet the following requirements:
(1) 
One banner sign is permitted per event.
(2) 
The banner shall be limited to a maximum size of 16 square feet.
(3) 
There shall be a limited display period of 30 days prior to the event to three days after the completion of the event.
C. 
New York State Department of Transportation portable variable message signs are allowed for special events.
A. 
Promotional signs/banners are allowed a maximum size of 16 square feet and are allowed to be displayed for a maximum of 10 days. Signage is allowed for a maximum of four promotional events per calendar year.
B. 
Construction signs/banners are allowed a maximum size of 16 square feet and are allowed to be displayed for a maximum of 30 days prior to the start of construction to three days after opening.
The downtown area of the Village contains the Clayton Historic District and the Captain Simon Johnston House that are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Village intends to maintain the current historic small-town atmosphere of the Village. Therefore digital signs are prohibited within the Village of Clayton. The only exceptions being the digital displays for gas prices that exist at the gasoline stations within the Village and the NYS Department of Transportation temporary message boards that may be placed at the gateways into the Village for notification of a special event.
A. 
No trespassing signs with a maximum size of 12 inches by 12 inches.
B. 
Political campaign signs.
In order to provide safe travel ways for motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians and to prevent light pollution and light trespass the following lighting standards shall be applied:
A. 
The style of the light and light standard shall be consistent with the architectural style of the principal building.
B. 
The maximum height of freestanding lights shall not exceed the height of the principal building or 30 feet, whichever is less.
C. 
All lighting shall be "cut-off" fixtures to restrict the area illuminated. Refer to the diagrams below. "No cut-off" fixtures are prohibited.
D. 
The illuminated area shall be contained under the horizontal plane of the light fixture. These diagrams show an example of a "no cut-off" fixture on the left that is not allowed and an example of a cut-off light fixture where the illuminated area is controlled.
E. 
Where lights are along lot lines, they shall be properly shielded from adjacent properties.
F. 
Spotlight type fixtures attached to buildings are prohibited.
G. 
Freestanding lights shall be so located and protected to avoid being easily damaged by vehicles.
H. 
Lighting shall be located along streets, parking areas, at intersections, and where various types of circulation systems merge, intersect, or split.
I. 
Pathways, sidewalks, and trails shall to be lit with low or mushroom type standards for safety considerations.
J. 
Stairways and building access points shall be properly illuminated.
K. 
The following intensity in footcandles shall be provided:
(1) 
Parking lots: an average of 1.0 footcandle.
(2) 
Intersections: maximum 2.0 footcandles.
(3) 
Maximum at lot lines: 6.6 footcandles.
