The position of Police Chaplain for the Township of Cranford Police Department is hereby created in accordance with N.J.S.A. 40A:14-141. The position will be a volunteer position without rank or salary, shall be under the Director of Public Safety and the Police Committee, and subject to the control of the Chief of Police.
Any person appointed as Police Chaplain shall be an ordained clergyman in good standing in the religious body from which he/she is selected. The Police Chaplain shall have basic training and shall be a certified Police Chaplain credentialed in accordance with the rules and regulations of the Cranford Police Department.
The Township Committee shall, by majority vote, appoint the Police Chaplain.
There shall not be more than eight Chaplains appointed.
The duties of Police Chaplain shall include but not be limited to assisting the Township of Cranford Police Department in death notifications, employee counseling at the employee's request, attending funerals/viewings, visiting the sick at home or in hospitals, responding to scenes of tragedy such as homicides, suicides, and fatal motor vehicle crashes, attending and officiating at Township events as appropriate, and any other duties that may be assigned by the Chief of Police.
A person appointed as Chaplain shall serve during a term of one year and shall continue to serve until he/she is either replaced or reappointed.
