There shall be established a Cemetery Commission.[1]

Editor's Note: Ordinance No. 2009-1, adopted 12-21-2009, provided as follows: "That the name of the Cemetery Committee as originally adopted be changed to Lyme Cemetery Commission; and be it further ordained, that any reference to the Cemetery Committee as a Commission, prior to the enactment of this amendment is ratified and confirmed in all respects."
Said Commission shall have the following powers:
A. 
It shall manage and control all burial grounds owned by the Town of Lyme.
B. 
It shall receive funds from whatever source for the maintenance, care and improvement of the Town cemeteries or for burial lots or private lots within such cemeteries.
C. 
It shall establish and amend rules, bylaws and regulations for such cemeteries and lots.
D. 
It shall convey or receive lots within such cemeteries to or from persons in accordance with those rules, bylaws and regulations established by the Commission.
E. 
It shall contract with those persons, companies, corporations, associations or partnerships for the care, maintenance and improvement of such cemeteries and lots within such cemeteries.
F. 
It shall disburse funds, within the limits established by law, for the care, maintenance and improvement of such cemeteries and lots, and to purchase lots as established by the rules, bylaws and regulations.

The Commission shall be composed of seven members who shall be appointed by the Board of Selectmen and they shall be residents of the Town of Lyme.
Any vacancy in the membership of the Commission which may occur through death, resignation or otherwise may be filled for the unexpired term of such member by appointment by the Board of Selectmen.

A. 
The initial term of office of the members shall be as follows:
(1) 
Two members shall serve for a period of two years.
(2) 
Two members shall serve for a period of four years.
(3) 
Three members shall serve for a period of six years.
B. 
Thereafter, at the expiration of the original term of office of each of the original members, a member shall be appointed for a period of six years.
