Each fire company shall have active members who actually respond to alarms and fight fires, and may have junior members and such other classes of membership as they may by their rules and bylaws provide.
No person shall become an active member of a fire company unless that person is 18 years of age or older, and unless he shall be physically fit to perform the duties of a firefighter, as evidenced by a certificate to that effect by a practicing physician of the state, after physical examination for that purpose.

A. 
All duly qualified applicants for the position of Lawrence Township firefighter shall be classified in the following classes:
(1) 
Residents of Lawrence Township.
(2) 
Other residents of Mercer County.
(3) 
Other residents of the State of New Jersey.
(4) 
All other qualified applicants.
B. 
All appointments to the position of Lawrence Township firefighter shall be made in accordance with N.J.S.A. 40A:14-10.1a, with all those in Class I to be appointed first and then those in each succeeding class in the order above listed.
C. 
All applicants classified Class I must be residents of Lawrence Township as of the announced closing date of the Civil Service examination for the position and must maintain such residency continuously up to and including the date of appointment.

A. 
Junior firefighters, ages 14 through 17, are permitted in each volunteer fire company by virtue of the establishment for each such company of a junior firefighter's auxiliary pursuant to state law.
B. 
The following rules and regulations shall govern junior firefighters:
(1) 
Each junior firefighter shall have parental permission, in writing and proved, as set forth in statute.
(2) 
Each junior firefighter must present evidence of a satisfactory physical examination by a licensed physician.
(3) 
Junior firefighters must maintain grades of "C" or better in each subject in each marking period. Report cards must be submitted to Fire Chief each marking period for confirmation of compliance.
(4) 
A junior firefighter, age 16 or 17, may participate in activities until 10:00 p.m. on any night when school is in session the following day and until 11:00 p.m. on all other nights.
(5) 
A junior firefighter, age 14 or 15, may participate in activities until 9:00 p.m. on any night.
(6) 
A junior firefighter, age 14 or 15, may participate in drilling and training but may only observe other fire activities. Junior firefighters of this age may not respond to emergency calls either on Fire Company apparatus or by any other means. Junior firefighters of this age may ride on Fire Company apparatus in nonemergency activities only.
(7) 
Each fire company may promulgate such rules and regulations pertaining to its junior members as necessary. Said rules and regulations may not be inconsistent with Township ordinance or statute.
Every person seeking to become an active or junior member of a Fire Company shall make application, and upon his election to membership by the members. Each Company may establish its own procedures, qualifications and probation period, provided the same are reasonably related to the applicant's capability to respond to alarms and fight fires, are not contrary to this section or any state law, and provided that the decision is made by at least a majority of the membership present and voting. After approval of membership, and confirmation by the Township governing body, the new member's name shall be entered on a roll of firefighters kept by the Municipal Clerk, and he shall be entitled to such badges of membership as are used by that particular fire company.
The Fire Department consists of three volunteer fire companies as at present organized in the Township and recognized as doing public fire duty.
A. 
The widow or minor children of any volunteer firefighter or member of the Township First Aid Squad who shall hereafter be killed or die as the result of injuries sustained in the course of performance of duty as a member of a volunteer Fire Company or First Aid Squad regularly serving the residents of the Township shall be paid a pension.
B. 
Such pension shall be the sum of $5,000 per annum, to be appropriated annually in the Township budget, and paid in the same manner as municipal employees are paid.
C. 
Eligibility for such pension shall continue in the case of a widow only as long as the status of widowhood continues, and the pension shall be paid to the widow, or to the minor child or children of such deceased volunteer Firefighter or First Aid Squad member, if he leaves no widow surviving him, or to such minor child or children after the death of such widow.
D. 
This section is passed pursuant to and in accordance with the authority granted in Chapter 168, Laws of 1957, Laws of New Jersey, as amended and supplemented.

A. 
Established.
(1) 
A Length of Service Awards Program is herewith created in accordance with Chapter 388 of the Laws of 1997 to reward members of the Slackwood Volunteer Fire Company, Lawrenceville Volunteer Fire Company, Lawrence Road Volunteer Fire Company and the Lawrence Township Emergency First Aid Squad, for their loyal, diligent and devoted services to the residents of Lawrence Township, effective January 1, 2001.
(2) 
The LOSAP shall provide for fixed annual contributions to a deferred income account for each volunteer member who meets the criteria set forth below; that such contributions shall be made in accordance with a plan that shall be established by the Township Council pursuant to P.L. 1997, c. 338 (N.J.S.A. 40A:14-183 et seq.); and that such plan shall be administered in accordance with the laws of the State of New Jersey, the United States Internal Revenue Code, and this section.
(3) 
The LOSAP shall provide for annual contributions as credit to each eligible member who meets the criteria as follows:
(a) 
Number of points required per year for firefighters to qualify: 125.
(b) 
Number of points required per year for first aid organization members to qualify: 100.
(c) 
Volunteer has fulfilled all training requirements of the Township of Lawrence.
(d) 
For regular annual service: $500.
B. 
Program costs.
(1) 
The annual estimated cost of the program is as follows:
(a) 
Fire companies for regular annual services: $40,000.
(b) 
First aid squad for regular annual services: $19,000.
C. 
Program points.
(1) 
Each volunteer member shall be credited with points for volunteer services provided to the Slackwood Volunteer Fire Company, Lawrenceville Volunteer Fire Company and Lawrence Road Volunteer Fire Company, as provided below:
