A smoke detector device must meet or exceed Underwriters Laboratory
standard number 217 effective July 5, 1977 as amended and able when
installed at locations required to provide not less than level 4 protection
as defined in the National Fire Protection Association's publication
number 74 designated ANSI Se 3.14-1976 effective April 15, 1976 designated
household fire warning equipment. The smoke detector must have a self-contained
power supply, and must be capable of emitting an audible signal of
at least 85 decibels at a range of 10 feet.
A smoke detector device shall always be installed on ceilings,
but never closer than 12 inches from corners of interior walls. Such
installation shall be in the following areas:

It shall be the owners responsibility and duty to maintain or have
maintained all smoke detector devices as follows:
(1)
Ensure the working condition of each smoke detector device at intervals
of not less than three months;
(2)
Maintain smoke detector devices in proper working condition and replace
defective smoke detector devices; and
(3)
To inform all persons residing in dwelling units of any structure
of the presence and purpose of the smoke detector devices.
B.
Should any owner, or any other person, wish to relocate or temporarily
render inoperative a smoke detector device after a certificate of
inspection has been issued, such person must first obtain written
approval from the inspector.
