[HISTORY: Adopted by the Council of the City of Perth Amboy 10-27-2010 as Ord. No. 1532-2010. Amendments noted where applicable.]
The nonpartisan municipal elections in the City of Perth Amboy are currently held during the month of May according to New Jersey statutes.
The New Jersey Legislature has amended the applicable statutes (N.J.S.A. 40:45-7.1) to permit municipalities to hold nonpartisan municipal elections on the same day as the general elections in the month of November.
The city believes that it will be more efficient, cost effective and in the best interest of the citizens to hold the municipal elections on the same day as the general elections in November.
A.
In accordance with the initial Uniform Nonpartisan Elections Law, regular municipal elections in the City of Perth Amboy shall be conducted on the day of the general election, the Tuesday after the first Monday in November.
B.
Pursuant to statute, the term of any person in office on the date of adoption of this ordinance (Ordinance No. 1532-2010 was adopted October 27, 2010) shall be extended until the beginning of the term of the person elected to that office on the day of the general election in November.
C.
The term of any officer elected in the November election shall begin on January 1 next following election.
D.
Pursuant to statute, the city shall not be permitted to change the day of the election back to the second Tuesday in May until: (1) at least ten years have passed since the adoption of this ordinance; and (2) the new ordinance providing for new elections to occur on the second Tuesday in May has been adopted by the municipal governing body.
E.
Run-off elections shall be held in the municipality.
