The Police Department shall consist of a maximum of one (1)
Chief of Police, one (1) Captain, three (3) Lieutenants, six (6) Sergeants
and twenty-seven (27) Patrolmen.

The chain of command within the Police Department shall be as
follows:
Chief of Police
Captain
Lieutenant
Sergeant
Patrolman
The office of Chief of Police is hereby reconstituted. The Chief
of Police shall be the head of the Police Department and he shall
be directly responsible to the appropriate authority for the efficient
and routine day to day operations of the Department. The Chief of
Police is responsible for the general direction, control and supervision
of the Police Department as authorized and provided for by statute,
ordinances, rules and regulations, or other law.

The rank of Captain is hereby reconstituted. The Captain shall,
under the supervision of the Chief of Police, have the subordinate
responsibility of directing the work of a Division, either uniformed
or nonuniformed, for the Department in accordance with the rules,
regulations and procedures of the Department and shall provide for
the continuity of the operation of the Department in the absence of
the Chief of Police.
Rank in the Somerville Police Department as established by municipal
ordinance shall descend in the following order:
When officers are of the same grade, they shall rank according
to their seniority determined by time in rank. When two (2) or more
officers are appointed to the same grade on the same day, each shall
rank according to his respective position on the eligibility list
which determined the order of his appointment to that grade.
