(a)
The owners of all existing multi-family buildings including apartments,
townhouses and condominiums shall, within five years of the effective
date of Ordinance 726, install in each dwelling unit a minimum of
one approved ionization type smoke detector sensing visible and invisible
particles of combustion. Such detector shall be electrically operated
and wired into the hall or bedroom light circuit, and installed in
a manner and location approved by the authority having jurisdiction.
There shall be no exposed electric cord plugged into a wall outlet.
No detector shall be battery operated.
(b)
The owners of all new multi-family buildings including apartments,
townhouses and condominiums shall install in each dwelling unit a
minimum of one approved ionization type smoke detector sensing visible
and invisible particles of combustion. Such detector shall work on
electric and battery power and have the capacity to be connected to
both sources of power simultaneously. Such detector shall be installed
in a manner and location approved by the authority having jurisdiction.
When actuated, the detector shall provide an alarm suitable to warn
the occupants within the dwelling unit.

The owners of existing multi-family residential buildings affected
by this article shall install the necessary smoke detectors as follows:
(a)
In 20% of their dwelling units within one year of the effective date
of Ordinance 726.
(b)
In an additional 20% of their dwelling units within two years of
the effective date of Ordinance 726.
(c)
In an additional 20% of their dwelling units within three years of
the effective date of Ordinance 726.
(d)
In an additional 20% of their dwelling units within four years of
the effective date of Ordinance 726.
(e)
In the final 20% of their dwelling units within five years of the
effective date of Ordinance 726.

Failure to comply with the provisions of this article shall
constitute a summary offense and shall be punishable by a fine not
exceeding $500 for each failure to install the required smoke detectors.
