Pursuant to the authority contained in an Act of the Legislature of the State of New Jersey known as the "Law Against Discrimination," N.J.S.A. 10:5-1 et seq., the Mayor and Council of the City of South Amboy are authorized to appoint a local Commission on Human Relations to aid and effectuate in accordance with the law against discrimination.
The local Commission shall consist of seven members who shall serve without compensation. Each member shall be appointed by the Mayor with the advice and consent of Council for a term of four years and until his/her successor is appointed and qualified, except that, of the members first appointed, two shall serve for terms of four years, two shall serve for terms of three years, two shall serve for terms of two years and one shall serve for a term of one year. The City Council may appoint as a nonvoting member a member of Council to be a liaison to the Human Relations Commission.
The Commission shall elect for one-year terms from its members a Chairman, Vice Chairman and Secretary.
The Human Relations Commission shall attempt to foster, through community effort or otherwise, good will, cooperation and conciliation among the groups and elements of the inhabitants of the city and is empowered to make recommendations to the Mayor and City Council for the development of policies and procedures in general and for programs of formal or informal education that will aid in eliminating all types of discrimination based on race, creed, color, national origin, ancestry, age, marital status, gender, sexual orientation/preference or physical or mental handicaps of any individual or because of the liability for service in the Armed Forces of the United States. The Human Relations Commission shall have such further powers and duties as may be provided by said law against discrimination in the State of New Jersey and by any amendments thereto.
