A. 
There shall be a Police Department whose personnel shall include a number of sworn police officers who have graduated from an accredited police academy and are certified by the Police Training Commission, as determined by the Mayor and Council.
B. 
In addition to sworn police officers, the Department's personnel shall include a number of special law enforcement officers, auxiliary officers and civilians, as determined by the Mayor and Council.
C. 
All of the Department's personnel shall be appointed by the Mayor with the advice and consent of the Council, subject to the policies and procedures established in this chapter and any applicable state statutes.
The Police Department shall preserve the public peace; protect life and property; detect, arrest and prosecute offenders of laws of the State of New Jersey and municipal ordinances of the Borough of Wood-Ridge; direct and control traffic; provide attendance and protection during emergencies and public gatherings; provide appearances in court; cooperate with all other law enforcement agencies; and provide its personnel with training, supervision and discipline to ensure the effectiveness and efficiency of the Department.

In accordance with N.J.S.A. 40A:14-118, the appropriate authority is hereby designated as the Mayor and Council, who shall adopt rules and regulations governing the Department and its personnel and who, acting through the Borough Administrator as Public Safety Director, shall be responsible for the overall performance of the Department.
