The purpose of the arson investigation unit, hereinafter sometimes referred to as the “unit,” shall be the prevention, investigation and suppressing of fires suspected to be willfully and negligently set either for profit, nor for profit, or for purposes of committing a fraud.

The fire chief of the fire department shall be the chief of the arson investigation unit and shall be directly responsible to the city manager.

The arson investigation unit shall be composed of members who have been certified by the state as a firefighter through the state commission on fire protection, certified by the state as a peace officer through the state commission on law enforcement officer standards and education, and who have been appointed to the unit by the chief of the unit.
